Most company 401(K) plans offer limited investment options which generally are tied to the equity and/or bond markets.  Self-Directed IRA’s have been available since 1974.  They provide a way to truly diversify your overall investment portfolio and offset the risk of having too narrow exposure to one asset class – stocks.
